Art Programs

When Brentwood High School opened in 1982, having an outstanding band was a priority. The community raised the funds to equip the band and the marching band won the Class A state championship in 1983 and the Class AA state championship in 1984. Significant performances through the years have included the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1995, the Orange Bowl Parade in 1997, and the Sugar Bowl/NCAA National Championship game New Years’ 2000.

The band program at Brentwood High School is comprised of many parts that together provide students with numerous opportunities to perform and develop their musical skills, including three large concert ensembles – The Concert Band, The Symphonic Band and The Wind Ensemble. The Brentwood Marching Band is a high-profile, nationally recognized, widely-traveled ensemble that enjoys a reputation for musical excellence aesthetically complemented by vivid visual images and movement reflecting the mood and character of the music performed in their competition program each fall.

The choral program at Brentwood High school is a fun and exciting way to get involved with fine arts. We have five choirs that perform a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Classical to Pop music. The choir performs regularly at football games, concerts on and off campus and at competitions. We regularly receive superior ratings at various competitions and many students continue performing after high school. Joining choir is also a great way to meet new people that enjoy singing and performing. There is a place for everyone in the choir, no matter your experience level.

Brentwood High School offers a variety of music classes for all levels of music enthusiasts. To find the right class for you, explore class goals below:

• AP Music Theory: The ultimate goal of the AP Music Theory course is to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. The achievement of this goal may be best promoted by integrated approaches to the student’s development of aural, sight singing, written, compositional, and analytical skills.
• Class Guitar: Class Guitar is offered to students of varying talent levels at BHS, though most students enter the class with little guitar experience. Any student at BHS may enroll. The curriculum is designed with the assumption that the student knows nothing about playing or reading music and the students will begin by learning the basics. The students will learn to read tablature, music notation, and chord diagrams. They will play their guitar as a class, small ensemble, and in a solo setting. They will play the blues, rock, and classical genres. This class is a fun and enjoyable way to become introduced to playing a musical instrument and playing in a musical ensemble.
• Music History: In Music History students learn the elements of musical literacy, common musical practices from medieval, Renaissance, Baroque Classical, Romantic, and Modern musical periods. Students also study Blues, Jazz, the American musical, the birth of Rock and Roll, British Invasion, and the brain’s response to music.

The Brentwood High School Orchestra meets as a class in the regular school day schedule for violin, viola, cello and double bass players. This ensemble has been offered at BHS for only eight years but already enjoys an enviable reputation for outstanding performances as well as for placing students in All Midstate and All State Orchestras. In addition, members of the BHS Orchestra have also been selected for the National Honors Orchestra, performing at the National Association for Music Education National Conference in October of 2013 and 2014.

All students interested in Theatre are encouraged to participate. Whether it is performing for a crowd or set design, there is something for everyone. Below is a list of Theatre course descriptions.

Level 1 students learn the basics of theatre. First semester is establishing acting principles. Second semester studies genres of acting and students put into practice the principles learned through script work.
Level 2 students refine acting skills through many different acting exercises and scene work.
Level 3 and 4 students focus on further refining their acting skills. This class performs their final projects each semester in the Center stage performances each nine weeks.
Theatre Production classes learn the basics of backstage. The students design and build the sets for the shows.
